How We're Changing Everything
Get ready for a series of posts on a handful of changes we’re making within the Creative Department at Elevation Church after 5 years to ensure we can do this for another 5…then 10…then 20…and then someone else will probably take it from there…I’ll probably be watching MASH re-runs.
It’s so easy to get caught up in doing more of the same stuff that got us...

Motivate Me
There are only 2 ways to be motivated: to be drawn toward something or driven away from something.
I think both are effective. I think most people prefer to be drawn toward something. I think some of the most productive motivation is to be driven away from something.
For example…
You start exercising. Because you want to be healthy? Or because you’re afraid of looking like...

Timing Matters
One of the best lessons I’ve learned from my Pastor is timing matters.
Short version…read Numbers 13-14. 12 spies went out to take a look at the land God promised Israel, and only 2 were feelin’ it. 2 wanted to take what God said was theirs. 2 said the obstacles were real, but not too big for God.
But 10 said, “no”. 10 couldn’t believe it was possible to...
iPad Apps People Love
Here are some of the iPad apps people suggested when I asked for “apps you really love besides games”.
Disclaimer: these are all organic, nothing added…straight from the tweets…don’t even know if they exist.

Wok-e Tok-e
Today was the world premier of our new Elevation Design Team Show: Wok-e Tok-e. All I can say is probably no where to go but down from here.
Had fun with it, shared a lot of our Creative Process and hopefully learned a bunch about all the things we did poorly just trying to get it out the door. But I read something today that stated, “It’s better to be 1 for 20 than 0 for 0.”...
Great Idea vs Great Stewardship
One of the best things I’ve learned in the past year is the difference between great ideas and great stewardship.
I read Scott Belsky’s Making Ideas Happen and an excerpt from John Maeda (Rhode Island School of Design) challenged the way I think. Simply stated, most ideas never happen…they die as ideas, nothing more. But the ideas that actually push industries forward are a...

Things I Like: Doing Things for the First Time
One of my very favorite things in the world is doing things for the first time. Not necessarily that I do something for MY first time, but that I get to be a part of doing something that’s never been done before. In other words, I like being a part of something that’s never been done before…by anyone…ever.
Not sure why, but it’s when I seem to come alive. If you...
Things I Learn: Not All Pants Are Made the Same
Someone gave me several pairs of pants today.
I learned not all pants are created equal…or my pear-shaped body fluctuates waist size every couple minutes as I try on different pairs.
A 31/30 sometimes fits like a 33/32 or sometimes a 21/30. And occasionally like a 31/30. That’s why I have a hard time buying pants online.
Pants party.
Things I Like: Newk's
The Italian from Newk’s is my favorite. Possibly my favorite sandwich of all-time…for now.
What I like even more is how Newk’s partnered with us at Elevation to honor our first-time guests with a free lunch during our series Honorology. It’s the little things that set people apart. The willingness to do what other people won’t or don’t.
Thanks Newk’s.
Things I Learn: It's Hard to Not Help My Kids
One of the saddest things that happens as a parent is to see your kids suffering or struggling and not be able to help them.
For example, Lucy has a little rash on her belly right now and she keeps scratching it until it bleeds. The sad part? I keep putting calamine lotion on it, and she keeps crying uncontrollable every time.
So hard to just sit back and let your kids go through their process....
Things I Like: Pinochle and Backgammon
Sometimes I feel like I’d fit much better in the 50s. Playing games like Pinochle and Backgammon are some of my very favorite things to do. Sounds kooky, but true story.
Kelly and I learned to play Pinochle while living with her aunt and uncle in Portland while our house was being built.
And backgammon…well, there’s an app for everything.
With all my vintage interests,...
Things I Learn: Words Matter
Reading a great book right now called Axiom on general leadership principles. The very first one in the book is on how words matter.
You might not agree, but when you take the time to choose them right, the payoff usually follows.

Things I Learn: Family Culture
This morning our 2 older girls were arguing who would get to wake up early, get ready while everyone sleeps and go to church early with me to serve.
I really love what we’re starting to create in our family. I’m discovering it’s less about balance and more about a lifestyle we live. It’s not different compartments for family, church, friends and whatever else.
I’ve...
